Contrasts, a faculty/student recital of Dr. Chris Bade, Dr. Leon Harshenin, and Taylor University junior Hasun Yoo will be presented at 7:30 pm in Butz-Carruth Recital Hall on Friday, April 13th. This recital has a special focus on faculty and student artistic collaboration. Pieces chosen for this concert are musical works at the highest level of expressive difficulty demanding the utmost in concentration and musical conversation. The world premiere of TU music professor Dr. Dana Collins’ Circumference for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano will be the opening work. Circumference has many elements of modern musical composition including restless rhythmic energy, minimalism, and advanced chromaticism. Suite by Darius Milhaud is unabashedly joyful with spirited rhythmic and melodic interplay among the three players, particularly between violin and clarinet. Bela Bartok’s Contrasts was commissioned by the leading clarinetist (Benny Goodman) and violinist (Josef Szigeti) of the day. At the first performance, Bartok himself was the pianist.
