MARION — The NRA Foundation has awarded the Marion High School JROTC Rifle Marksmanship Team a grant totaling $4,598 to fund new equipment purchases.

"We are very excited that the NRA Foundation is making an investment in our community through their support of our youth marksmanship program," said retired Lt. Col. David Farlow, Senior Army Instructor for MHS JROTC. “Every year we teach nearly 100 cadets how to properly handle and safely operate an air rifle. Then they learn the joy that competitive marksmanship can bring.”

The Marion JROTC Rifle Team has accumulated several honors, including state and regional championships, as well as entrance qualifications to compete at various national championships.

“Our Rifle Team continues to do well each year, racking up titles and championships,” Farlow said. “But what I think is more important is that all of our cadets learn about gun safety. Quite simply, this makes our community safer. And I am pleased that the NRA Foundation is willing to support our efforts to teach young people weapons safety.”

The grant will provide the marksmanship team with new equipment to be used in precision category competition, the highest level of air rifle competition, and the same level in which college and Olympics athletes compete. Equipment to be purchased with the grant includes a new precision air rifle, three precision shooting outfits, sighting scopes and stands, and other needed range equipment.
