Hands of Hope announces events for October Domestic Violence Awareness month

October 02, 2017
Domestic violence is shaming and devastating to so many in our community and society.

During the month of October, the community can show their support for Hands of Hope’s efforts to break the cycle of domestic violence by participating in one of several events scheduled in Grant and Wabash counties.

In both communities, the respective mayors have agreed to read a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Then on Oct. 6, as part of the First Friday activities in Wabash, Hands of Hope’s Community Education Coordinator Megan Long and a group of community residents, along with TADA members will dance to raise awareness about domestic violence. This event will take place in front of the Wabash County Tourism & Visitors Bureau at 221 S. Miami St.

Also that evening, “Sheranda’s Trinketz”, by Stephnie LaVasseur will be on sale with proceeds going to Hands of Hope. And, people can have their left ring fingernail painted by local volunteers to raise awareness by starting a conversation about the purple nail. The national campaign is called “#PutTheNailinit" and was created by Safe Horizons New York.

In both communities, people will have an opportunity to wear purple and show support with their attire on Oct. 19 as part of national #PurpleThursday. Hands of Hope is encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate money in exchange for wearing purple on that day.

The month will close out with the annual Hands of Hope Candlelight Vigil at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26 at St James Lutheran Church with a survivor of domestic violence sharing her story and music by Jordan Rife and her band.

If you have questions about any of the activities going on in October please contact Hands of Hope Director, Linda Wilk at 765-662-9971 ext. 123.
