Indiana Wesleyan University’s Dr. H. Michael Buck, professor of English, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Dodd-Elder Endowed Professorship in English and Literature for 2018-2019 academic year. The honor recognizes a person of outstanding merit, ability and scholarship in English or literature.
Buck has been employed at IWU since 1989, and he served as division chair and professor of English in the Division of Modern Language and Literature for seventeen years. He has taken students on travel trips to England and Scotland for nearly twenty years. A Sir Walter Scott Scholar, Buck has written numerous scholarly articles and published internationally, as well as across the United States. Most recently, he published “Last Execution at Grassmarket, A Novel.” What Buck enjoys the most is teaching, advising and mentoring his students.
The Dodd-Elder Endowed Professorship in English and Literature was established by Dr. Mary Catherine Dodd, a 1921 graduate of Marion College/IWU, who joined its faculty in 1923, and her star pupil, Dr. Marjorie Elder, a 1945 graduate, who joined the faculty in 1949.
Together Dodd and Elder taught, advised and mentored students a total of 85 years. Students and faculty of IWU have experienced the impact of their tenure in multiple ways, not the least of which is through the Mary C. Dodd Honors Program and Elder Hall academic building. Their impact on the IWU community continues through the Dodd-Elder Endowed Professorship, which commemorates their years as colleagues and friends, and especially their love for teaching and scholarship.
Contributions to this endowment in honor of Dodd and Elder are welcome. Please contact the Office of Advancement at Indiana Wesleyan University, 4201 S Washington St., Marion, IN 46953. If you have questions, call 765-677-230 or email the Director of Advancement Services, Cathy Gann, at
