The Marion Philharmonic Orchestra held the 28th Annual MPO Concerto | Aria Competition on November 18, 2017, in the Baker Recital Hall on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. The competition is sponsored by the MPO Friends and Dr. Steve Hyman, the inaugural winner of the competition and adjudicator for this season’s event. The competition was open to all Indiana High School students and Collegiate students in Grant County. Participants were required to play a movement from the standard repertoire that has orchestral accompaniment. Winners in both divisions received a cash prize, and the Collegiate winner will be given the opportunity to perform on a regularly scheduled MPO concert.
Winner of the High School Division was violinist Anna Brandle, 16, a homeschool student from Upland, Indiana. She performed the first movement of Bruch’s Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Anna will be recognized on the MPO’s upcoming Family Concert, Beethoven Lives Upstairs, on Saturday, March 3, 2018, in Rediger Auditorium at Taylor University. Runner-up in the High School Division was pianist Ashley Rice, 17, a senior from Oak Hill High School.
Pianist Jonathan Kroll, a sophomore at Indiana Wesleyan University, was chosen as this year’s winner of the Collegiate Division for his performance of the first movement of Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 2 in G Minor. Jonathan will perform with the MPO on a regular season concert in 2018-2019. Runner-up in the Collegiate Division was clarinetist Steven Christophersen, a sophomore at Taylor University. Steven performed the first movement of Weber’s Concerto No. 1 in F minor.
Judges for the competition were Diana Miles Huntoon, adjunct instructor of voice at Anderson University and Butler University; Joan White, principal second violin for the MPO and teacher at Acacia Academy in Kokomo; and pianist Dr. Steve Hyman. Dr. Hyman was a featured soloist with the MPO in 2012 and 2017. Dr. Hyman is also Professor of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Tickets to the concerts mentioned above are available by calling the MPO Box Office at 765.662.0012.
