IWU Appoints Speaker for First Annual Luther Lee Lecture
 
The first annual Luther Lee Lecture will feature Dr. Christena Cleveland. Cleveland is an associate professor of reconciliation studies at Bethel University, a social psychologist, author and speaker. Her passion is to build bridges that will overcome cultural divisions in groups through uncovering the underlying processes that affect relationships within and between groups.
 
In 2014, Cleveland was recognized as one of Christianity Today’s “33 Under 33” and one of JET magazine’s five “online shepherds to follow.”
 
Cleveland is the author of “Uncovering the Hidden Forces that Keep Us Apart,” a 2013 Leadership Journal Book Award winner. She is currently writing The Priesthood of the Privileged (InterVarsity Press), which examines power and inequality in the Church.
 
The Luther Lee Lecture Series was established in 2014 by Indiana Wesleyan University’s John Wesley Honors College and Global Engagement Office as a way to highlight teaching and research occurring at the intersection of race, class, gender and the Christian faith. The annual event is named in honor of Luther Lee, nineteenth century abolitionist, feminist and co-founder of the Wesleyan denomination. Intended to help foster the “beloved community,” the lectures support theologically informed visions of multicultural enrichment and provide resources to assist Christians in becoming ambassadors of reconciliation to a divided and broken world.
