MLK Day Concert at Taylor University
As part of the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr Day at Taylor University, the nationally recognized Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will present a free concert of jazz music by notable African-American composers, singers, and bands who have contributed significantly to the Great American Songbook on Monday, January 15 at 7:30 pm in Rediger Chapel Auditorium. This program will include popular hit music of Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sammy Davis Jr, Stevie Wonder, and Ella Fitzgerald among others.
The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is Indiana’s premier professional repertory large jazz ensemble as well as the state’s official ambassador of big-band jazz. Composed of the leading professional instrumentalists and vocalists from the Central Indiana area, the orchestra is directed by Taylor University adjunct professor Jeff Anderson, who also plays lead trumpet.
This 75-minute program is presented in conjunction with a day of learning on Martin Luther King Jr Day that is an annual Taylor University tradition with guest speakers, a chapel service, and special lectures and educational forums throughout the day. All MLK Day events are free and open to the public.
