Marion, IN – August 22, 2016 The Marion Philharmonic Orchestra will present “Orchestra 101,” the Annual LaRita Boren Children’s Concert, for area school children on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Indiana Wesleyan University Chapel Auditorium. The concert is free of charge and open to the public. Nearly 100 musicians will perform this concert, presented in collaboration with the Taylor and IWU Symphony Orchestras. During this multi-media event, students will travel through time and space to discover how the orchestra began. Students will also have the opportunity to meet the musicians and sit on stage during the performance. With music education objectives set forth by Indiana’s Department of Education in mind, the 45-minute presentation is programmed to teach, inspire and entertain children of all ages.
Through a generous grant from an anonymous private foundation, the MPO will offer reimbursement of transportation costs on a first-come, first-served basis to student groups attending the concert. Since funding is limited, student groups are asked to register via phone or email by 9/15/16: 765-662-0012, mpo@marionphil.org.
As a community orchestra for patrons of the Grant County area, the MPO partners with generous donors each year to provide rich musical and educational experiences. This past season, the MPO engaged more than 1700 young people in its programming through concert attendance, production assistance, performance opportunities and internships. Since it began in 1969, the orchestra has evolved from a group of local volunteer musicians into a professional symphony that features the finest musicians in the state, in the most beautiful and intimate venues in the county.
