“She Loves Me” at Taylor University
This Tony Award-winning musical, which premiered in 1963 and has had several award-winning revivals, has been called the “most charming musical ever written.” It was written by the same team who created Fiddler on the Roof one year later: Joe Masteroff (book), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics), and Jerry Bock (music). She Loves Me is based on the 1937 play Parfumerie, by Hungarian playright Miklós László, which spawned three film adaptations, most recently the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie You’ve Got Mail. The plot revolves around Budapest shop employees Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other's secret pen pal met through lonely-hearts ads.
